Chronicles cannot safely be regarded as mere repositories of miscellaneous facts. That information comes from a chronicle is no guarantee of veracity or objectivity. Chronicles can be misinformed; they disagree, often on crucial points, and present different versions of events. Historians need to recognise such defects and discriminate between different accounts. It is easiest to do this where there are several to compare, as in the 1450s: as the Yorkist period proceeds, fewer annalists were at work and this approach is less practicable.

IS The epidemic of 1462-5, coming on top of a period of acute political unrest, and coinciding with a sharp drop in cloth exports, contributed to the disruption of economic activity in much of southern and eastern England, though its importance has still to be determined. 16 The effects of population losses were compounded by commercial difficulties. The forties, fifties and early sixties are known to have been a period of widespread economic contraction in Europe associated with declining internal trade, an outflow of precious metals to Asia, declining activity in the mints, a reduction of currency in circulation, and falling prices.

Many important towns have records that have been inadequately exploited. When important events happen locally, urban archives can make substantial contributions: because so much happened in London, the city's records, like the London chronicles, deserve a special place. Most corporations kept accounts which record gifts to local notables, payments for 36 THE WARS OF THE ROSES emissaries passing to and fro, and the costs of urban contingents to campaigns. Many such accounts were summarised in the Victorian and early twentieth-century reports of the Historic Manuscript Commission, a few like Salisbury, Hull and Barnstaple have been extracted elsewhere, but only a handful (like York and Newcastle) have been properly edited.
