L. celebre col nome di Gherardo Diceo (Life of Prof. Gherardo Sergiusti famous under the name of Gherardo Diceo),9 is preserved in the library of Lucca. Although it is quite biased, it contains some verifiable facts. 10 Because of Sergiusti’s fame, the affair of the two lovers, who openly lived together, was severely condemned in 1547, but not everyone shared such an opinion, as Pietro Pera states in his Miscellanea lucchese: 7. These ties were reciprocal, for both her brother and her mother (in 1551) named her as their main heir.
29 The text is followed by “Annotations” written by Giuseppe Mozzagrugno, the rectory priest of the Church of the Salvatore, in Lucca. This work was Matraini’s most popular, and rightly so, given its fine combination of a sincere profession of faith and of a familiarity with the Scriptures, accompanied by a few conscious borrowings from the apocryphal texts, sources for Mary’s childhood. It was republished in the seventeenth century. The possibility of returning to secular literature, forty years after the first publication of her poems, came with the reappearance of her canzoniere in 1595, but she could not hide the signs of her long activity dedicated to other literary genres, mainly religious and meditative.
