11 Several rangers were assigned daily to assist Campbell and Johnson in enforcing the peace. 12 If this was so, the aldermen were keeping the promise a secret because the minutes make no mention of the alleged transaction. Nevertheless, Campbell patiently waited for the money and when it did not arrive, he filed suit against the city and won his case (this also according to Baylor). However, in spite of legal action, he never drew a cent. The council could have paid something. It is true that taxes were uncollectable until the city corporation had passed its first year, but the town had other methods of raising revenue and took full advantage of them.
Most of these gunfights have long since been forgottenhaving been tucked away in faded letters and newspaper files. One of the most deadly, but least known, battles in Western history occurred in El Paso on February 18, 1881. This shoot-out established the precedent which engulfed Dallas Stoudenmire, although he had nothing to do with it. Through no fault of his own, the course of events snatched him up, pushed him toward his greatest fame, and set the stage for his death. Events began on January 28.
Cain leaped through the jail entrance and joined Thompson in an honest flight for freedom. Judging by their unhappy fate, they should have remained in prison or surrendered with the others. As the three men raced across the sandy area north of the prison, they were pursued and overtaken by a vaquero who had been eating in a restaurant on the east side of the plaza de la carcel. Startled by the shooting, he mounted his horse, removed a rifle from its scabbard, and rode after the escapees. He thus became the only man to stand between the prisoners and liberty, and he overtook them as they were crossing an acequia (irrigation ditch).
