And how are budget-challenged YA librarians to make selections from such an embarrassment of riches? Personally, looking at all the books in my office that I know the award committees DROWNING IN SUCCESS 37 and I will never be able to get around to reading, I worry about the unacknowledged masterpieces hidden there that may vanish without a trace.

A puzzling aspect of this trend is that nowhere do we find spiritual questioning on the part of the dying or any consolation of faith. The characters never turn to prayer for release from suffering, for peace, for comfort for their grieving relatives and friends. There is only a bleak sense of ending, of an imminent black nothingness.

Instead of fulfilling the American myth of the lone hero winning against the forces of evil, Cormier gave us an ending that raised a squirming handful of conflicting feelings and multiple interpretations. The novel has been the object of censorship attack ever since, and in 2004 it was, not for the first time, number one on the American Library Association’s list of censors’ targets.
