If, for any reason, the group exercises don’t occur, we meet anyway, not just to say hello to each other, but to make contact with each other as performers. For me, these three elements of preparation are very important: physical awakening, internal energy awakening and the creation of some sort of unity among the performers. The difficulty with doing physical exercises as part of your preparation is judging them accurately. If you work too hard, you become tired and find you have no physical energy left when you enter the stage.

This is another reason why we should train our body every single day. Physical exercises are valuable for many reasons, not just a strong physique or enhanced inner energy. And we should feel affection towards our body. However, we mustn’t get confused; love for our body should not become the centre of our personal existence. It must not become attached to our ego, or a source of narcissism. While everyone’s body can be viewed as a temple, the actor’s body is a temple for the public. It must become the site of events that provide wonderful sensations and emotions for other people.
